Dear Net Reader,

I hope you enjoyed visiting this website and that the information you found was intriguing and useful. What follows is intended for the specifier - whether architect, quantity surveyor, conservation officer, builder or period building owner.

I want to explain how and why London Crown Glass was founded and why I believe choosing an authentic glass is so important, rather than the usual option preferred by some glaziers of Float or Horticultural glass.

I have spent 50 years completely involved in the window glass trade - the last 15 years finding out about the history of window glass over the centuries.

Early in 1991 I founded The London Crown Glass Company, which uniquely concentrates on supplying the correct period window glass. I do not supply Float, Drawn Sheet or Horticultural glass, as these are all machine made glasses and are of the 20th century. They look totally out of place when glazed in period buildings - even to the untrained eye.

If you believe that historic buildings should be restored and repaired using authentic materials - and I can list many leading architects and specifiers who do - then I guarantee that London Crown Glass will always provide the correct authentic glass. My advice will be based on the best choice of glass to suit the building itself. The glass I will offer and recommend will be the result of 10 years of research and not the expediency of making a sale.

Contact me if you need to choose the correct glass - give me as much information as you have, relating to the age and history of the original building and any subsequent window alterations and I will give you the best advice available - even if I cannot supply the correct glass, I will recommend the best source.

If you would like a reasonably accurate budget figure for using our glass, send me an elevation drawing from which I will give you a price. At least you will know what it will cost to use the correct glass.

I want to continue to be proud of having supplied the best glasses to many fascinating buildings. One of the pleasant "perks" of my Company is the chance to visit so many historic buildings.

My thanks go in particular to The National Trust, Historic Scotland, English Heritage, The Crown Estates and many many leading Conservation Architects who have specified our glass when restoring their properties with great care.

Do contact me for advice or information.

Yours faithfully,

Christopher Salmond, Managing Director.
